Stocks dip on blue chip losses

Al­though the ma­jor­ity of stocks posted gains in yes­ter­day’s bourse session, blue chips and the main in­dex suf­fered losses af­ter a sell­ing spree dur­ing the last few hours of trad­ing.

The Athens Ex­change (ATHEX) gen­eral in­dex closed at 1,328.10 points, drop­ping by 1.39 per­cent from Tues­day’s clos­ing at 1,346.87 points. The blue chip FTSE/ATHEX 20 in­dex fell 1.73 per­cent to end at 593.56 points, but the mid-cap FTSE/ATHEX 40 in­dex ex­panded by 0.12 per­cent.

Elak­tor out­per­formed among blue chips with growth of 2.77 per­cent, fol­lowed by Myti­li­neos (up 1.17 per­cent) and Pi­raeus Bank (0.97 per­cent). Vio­halco was the worst off, reg­is­ter­ing a fall of 4.20 per­cent, while Marfin Pop­u­lar Bank shed 4.11 per­cent and ATEbank de­clined by 3.64 per­cent. Al­pha Bank con­tracted by 3.56 per­cent and Na­tional Bank suf­fered losses of 2.46 per­cent.

In to­tal, 77 stocks moved up, 58 went down and 49 re­mained un­changed. Al­tec posted the big­gest rise with gains of 20 per­cent, while Ri­denco led the losers, shed­ding 14.29 per­cent.

Turnover came to 108.3 mil­lion eu­ros, up from 67 mil­lion on Tues­day.
