The right-wing opposition DISY party took the lead in parliamentary elections on Cyprus yesterday, with the island’s ruling Communist party, AKEL, in second place, according to exit polls. The polls showed DISY to have garnered between 35 and 37.5 percent of the vote, compared with 32 to 34.5 percent for AKEL. Both polls had a two percentage point margin of error and the difference between the two parties was too narrow to discern an outright winner before the announcement of the final results.
