Cyprus Pres­i­dent Dim­itris Christofias pledged yes­ter­day to seek stronger do­mes­tic con­sen­sus re­gard­ing ef­forts to re­unify the di­vided is­land and to boost the be­lea­guered econ­omy af­ter his com­mu­nist party (AKEL) nar­rowly lost Sun­day’s par­lia­men­tary elec­tions to its tra­di­tional rightwing ri­val (DISY). DISY won by 1.6 per­cent in a vote where ab­sten­tions reached a record 21.3 per­cent. Un­der Cyprus’s pres­i­den­tial sys­tem, par­lia­men­tary elec­tions do not re­sult in a change of gov­ern­ment but are seen as a gauge of voter sen­ti­ment.
