The European Court of Justice yesterday called on the Greek state to pay 22,000 euros in damages and court costs for Dimitris Constas, a professor of Athens’s Panteio University, after ruling that the academic had been denied the right to a fair trial in 2007. A court in Athens convicted Constas to 14 years in jail for the alleged embezzlement of university funds. Another nine university staff were also convicted. The Luxembourg-based court blamed critical comments by Costas Karamanlis, who had been prime minister at the time, and by Sotiris Hatzigakis, then justice minister, for prompting a guilty verdict without a fair trial.
