No railway service today due to dispute over staff transfers
Workers on the Kifissia-Piraeus electric railway (ISAP) have announced a 24-hour strike for today. The ISAP union reacted angrily to claims from the Transport Ministry that some unionists are resisting the government’s efforts to reduce the number of electric railway employees by transferring some people to other departments. Ministry officials claimed the resistance is a result of some unionists not wanting to lose their benefits. ISAP’s union rejected this and argued that the government is planning to transfer employees that are close to retirement and that it will leave the electric railway understaffed. It also claims that the government went against its own policy by recently transferring employees from privatized Olympic Airlines to ISAP.
