A luxury that’s not for us

Areferendum is probably the last thing that Greece needs right now. What Greece does need, and urgently, is a government that can make decisions, that can behave in a coordinated manner and that can put into effect a reform program in full without the members of its party tripping each other up. It needs the kind of government that it doesn’t have today because Prime Minister George Papandreou has lost control of his ministers and party members. He can no longer coordinate any of his administration’s efforts and he is putting up with an incredible amount of destructive behavior from his Cabinet and from members of his PASOK party. The top priority now is to save the country from complete financial ruin and the prime minister needs to focus his attention on the tough days ahead. A referendum can wait; it is a luxury that can be afforded only by countries that have all their other important issues solved, not by countries that are sinking.
