An 18-year-old Greek alleged to have hacked into the websites of Interpol and the FBI was released on conditional bail yesterday after defending himself on charges of fraud and the possession of weapons and explosives.

The youth was freed after posting bail of 5,000 euros and on the condition that he does not leave the country and reports regularly to police.

According to court sources, the teenager claimed that he used the 130 credit cards found at his home in the suburb of Aghios Dimitrios, southern Athens, where he lives with his mother, in his job as a representative for companies whose business is done on the Internet. As for two air guns found in the house, he said he had used them for firing practice. A gas mask was used for writing graffiti, he said.

Authorities apparently lack enough evidence to charge him with hacking into government websites as no corresponding charges were lodged.
