Reports about public sector reductions wrong, say ministries
The government yesterday denied press reports that a new salary scale in the public sector will result in 40 percent wage cuts for all civil servants. In a joint statement, the Interior and Finance ministries said that the reports had been based on incorrect estimates given by the ADEDY civil servants’ union. The government is planning to present a bill to Parliament in July that will bring public sector wages in line with those in the private sector. It will also reduce the number of different bonuses that are paid to civil servants from 54 to just two.
