Greece was among the European countries that saw a rise in the number of beaches polluted with bacteria from sewage, according to statistics published by the European Environment Agency. The EEA, which monitors 22,000 bathing sites, reported an overall 3.5 percent drop in the number of beaches meeting the basic standards for intestinal bacteria such as E. coli and fecal streptococci. In Greece, the drop was 5.6 percent, lower than in Portugal, Italy, Spain and France.
