Finance Minister Evangelos Venizelos joined his eurozone counterparts in Luxembourg yesterday to discuss the scheduled release of the latest tranche of emergency funding to Greece, valued at 12 billion euros, as talks continue about the likely creation of a second bailout package for the debt-ridden country.

Ahead of yesterday’s talks, Venizelos sought to strike a positive note. “It is a great opportunity for me to repeat the strong commitment of the Greek government and the strong will of the Greek people for the implementation of the program,” he told reporters, refering to a new raft of austerity measures due to be voted on in Parliament by the end of the month.

Assuming office last Friday from outgoing minister George Papaconstantinou, Venizelos had suggested that he would ask his eurozone counterparts to approve some changes to the package aimed at offering a degree of “social justice.”
