Panayiotis Masouras, one of the suspected members of the Conspiracy of the Cells of Fire urban guerrilla group, appeared before a court in Athens yesterday on charges of taking part in the organization’s campaign of bloodless bomb attacks. Masouras refused to recognize the authority of the court, arguing that it was a “military tribunal” and that he was being persecuted for his political beliefs rather than any criminal activity. Masouras was released from custody recently after spending 18 months behind bars waiting for his trial, which is the maximum the law allows. A total of nine suspects are to be tried in connection with three bomb blasts at the Macedonia-Thrace Ministry, the home of former Deputy Public Order Minister Panayiotis Hinofotis and the office of Louka Katseli shortly before she was appointed labor minister.
