Lebanon has lodged a complaint with the United Nations over an agreement between Cyprus and Israel demarcating an exclusive economic zone (EEZ) at the maritime border between the two Eastern Mediterranean countries, according to a report in Lebanese English-language newspaper The Daily Star. Lebanese Foreign Affairs and Immigration Minister Adnan Mansour reportedly sent a letter to UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, saying the agreement violated “Lebanon’s sovereignty and economic rights and threatens peace and security in the area.” The Leviathan gas field, which lies within the EEZ, is one of the largest offshore gas finds in the past decade but Lebanon claims that the field spills over into its territory.
