State hos­pi­tals con­tinue to fa­vor ex­pen­sive medicines de­spite calls by Health Min­is­ter An­dreas Lover­dos sev­eral months ago for them to start phas­ing in cheaper generic drugs. Last fall, Lover­dos had ap­pealed to debt-rid­den state hos­pi­tals to phase out ex­pen­sive patented drugs and re­place them with generic al­ter­na­tives so they would even­tu­ally ac­count for half of all medicines pro­cured in hos­pi­tals. In the first four months of this year, how­ever, generic drugs ac­counted on av­er­age for just 14 per­cent of all drugs used in hos­pi­tals. The min­istry’s gen­eral sec­re­tary, Nikos Poly­zos, set a new tar­get of 30 per­cent to be reached by the end of the year.
