A fire that broke out in a landfill in Megara, west of Athens, in the early hours yesterday was brought under control by 12 firefighters after several hours. The fire started at 3.15 a.m. and was fanned by strong winds. Speaking on Skai TV, Megara Mayor Yiannis Marinakis noted that another fire had broken out in the same area two days ago. Deputy Interior Minister Paris Koukoulopoulos criticized opposition to government efforts to create new waste management facilities. “People demonize waste management and have to put up with the landfills as a result,” he told Skai TV.
