A fire that broke out in a land­fill in Me­gara, west of Athens, in the early hours yes­ter­day was brought un­der con­trol by 12 fire­fight­ers af­ter sev­eral hours. The fire started at 3.15 a.m. and was fanned by strong winds. Speak­ing on Skai TV, Me­gara Mayor Yian­nis Mari­nakis noted that an­other fire had bro­ken out in the same area two days ago. Deputy In­te­rior Min­is­ter Paris Kouk­oulopou­los crit­i­cized op­po­si­tion to gov­ern­ment ef­forts to cre­ate new waste man­age­ment fa­cil­i­ties. “Peo­ple de­mo­nize waste man­age­ment and have to put up with the land­fills as a re­sult,” he told Skai TV.
