Politicians’ assets under scrutiny
Judicial authorities have begun investigating how serving MPs obtained their personal assets as part of an effort to root out corruption in Greek politics, Kathimerini has learned.
Sources said that Supreme Court deputy prosecutor Panayiotis Nikoloudis has begun poring over the declaration of source of wealth (“pothen esches” in Greek) forms that MPs and party leaders submit each year. The forms tend to be an overview of each politician’s assets, such as property, but give little indication of how they obtained the money to purchase them.
Now, Nikoloudis has begun checking these records in a bid to gain more information about how the deputies amassed their assets. Sources said that the financial crimes squad (SDOE) is helping him. The government is set to pass a law later this year that will fastrack the trial of any politicians suspected of corruption.
