Ecumenical Patriarch Vartholomaios yesterday expressed his conviction that Greece will get through the current crisis, noting that the nation has survived worse, during a meeting with Prime Minister George Papandreou. “As a nation, we have survived worse times. I hope that this time, too, with national unity, under the leadership of your government, we will be able to cross the river,” said the patriarch, who is visiting Athens for the Special Olympics. Papandreou described Vartholomaios’ own struggle – “a tough and perpetual struggle not only for the Ecumenical Patriarchate but for all of Orthodoxy and its rights” – as an inspiration.
