The head of one of the largest state hospitals in Thessaloniki, AHEPA, has told Kathimerini that spending has been slashed at the institution’s cardiological clinic in line with government efforts to cut back public spending. Some 750,000 euros was spent on pacemakers, defibrillators and stents in the first five months of this year compared to 2.5 million euros in the same period of 2010 – more than three times the amount. “We know what each doctor spends now,” AHEPA director Giorgos Vergoulas told Kathimerini, adding that spending was being closely monitored and prices negotiated. “The party’s over,” he added.
