Restrictions to the access of vehicles to forested areas in the Peloponnese during forest fire season were announced yesterday in a move to protect vulnerable parts of the region from the kind of forest fires that have devastated significant tracts over the past decade and cost tens of lives. The decision, announced yesterday by Haralambos Kafyras, deputy governor of Western Greece, will also cover the archaeological sites of Ancient Olympia and the Temple of Apollo Epicurius, both of which suffered significant damage as a result of the deadly fires of 2007. The measure prohibits the circulation of traffic from July 1 to the end of October between 9 p.m. and 6 p.m.
