Navy shad­ows ves­sel in Greek ter­ri­to­rial wa­ters

Hel­lenic Navy ves­sels were yes­ter­day evening mon­i­tor­ing the move­ments of a Turk­ish Navy corvette that was seen in Greek ter­ri­to­rial wa­ters be­tween My­conos and Naxos in the east­ern Cy­clades be­tween 11 a.m. and 2.30 p.m. The Turk­ish ves­sel set sail from the Turk­ish port of Izmir on Tues­day morn­ing, ac­cord­ing to mil­i­tary sources. The in­ci­dent came just two weeks be­fore Prime Min­is­ter An­to­nis Sa­ma­ras is sched­uled to visit Ankara for talks with Turk­ish government of­fi­cials on a range of bi­lat­eral is­sues in­clud­ing a long­stand­ing dis­pute re­gard­ing the two coun­tries’ ter­ri­to­rial wa­ters and the con­ti­nen­tal shelf that Athens hopes to re­solve in or­der to prospect for oil and gas in the Aegean.
