A contract foreseeing the extension of the Thessaloniki metro, which itself has yet to be built, was signed yesterday by officials of Attiko Metro and the construction company Aktor following the handover of the Transport Ministry to Michalis Chrysochoidis.

The contract foresees the completion of a 4.78-kilometer extension with five stations – Nomarchia, Kalamaria, Aretsou, Nea Krini and Mikra – by 2018, according to an an- nouncement by Attiko Metro, which is responsible for the capital’s metro system and the construction of its Thessaloniki equivalent.

The planned extension to Thessaloniki’s eastern suburbs is not expected to run into the same delays that have beset the construction of the main route as initial excavations have not suggested the presence of significant archaeological finds underground, according to sources.
