New ur­ban ter­ror group be­lieved to be joint ven­ture

A pre­vi­ously un­known or­ga­ni­za­tion call­ing it­self Group of Pop­u­lar Rebels, which claimed re­spon­si­bil­ity on Wed­nes­day for an as­sault ri­fle at­tack on con­ser­va­tive New Democ­racy’s head­quar­ters last Jan­uary, is be­lieved by po­lice to be a joint ven­ture be­tween mem­bers of other guer­rilla groups such Pop­u­lar Rev­o­lu­tion­ary Army and Pop­u­lar Will and the bet­ter-known Rev­o­lu­tion­ary Strug­gle, whose leader Nikos Mazi­o­tis has been at large for a year.

Po­lice said that the style of the new procla­ma­tion was rem­i­nis­cent in parts of oth­ers signed by Rev­o­lu­tion­ary Strug­gle, in­clud­ing its claim that it at­tacked the Athens Stock Ex­change in Septem­ber 2009.
