Ex-min­is­ter gets sus­pended term over fake plates

For­mer Trans­port Min­is­ter Michalis Li­apis was handed a four-year sus­pended jail sen­tence yes­ter­day af­ter be­ing found guilty on charges of false cer­ti­fi­ca­tion and forgery for driv­ing his car with forged li­cense plates and no insurance.

Li­apis was rep­re­sented by his lawyers, who said the min­is­ter stayed home to avoid re­porters, whom he has ac­cused of hound­ing him since his ar­rest ear­lier this month. The for­mer con­ser­va­tive min­is­ter, who can pay off his sen­tence for just un­der 73,000 eu­ros, was also given a 3,000-euro fine for driv­ing an unin­sured ve­hi­cle, which was stopped af­ter run­ning a stop sign in Artemida, east­ern At­tica, on De­cem­ber 17.
