Bul­gar­ian woman stabbed

Po­lice in the north­ern port city of Thes­sa­loniki were in­ves­ti­gat­ing the cir­cum­stances sur­round­ing the death of a 34-year-old Bul­gar­ian woman who was found stabbed to death on Fri­day. Ac­cord­ing to re­ports, the vic­tim’s body was dis­cov­ered by her hus­band and a friend of his at their cen­tral Thes­sa­loniki apart­ment and dis­played mul­ti­ple stab wounds to the neck.

Chain­saw at­tack.

A 42-year-old man was ex­pected to face a prose­cu­tor af­ter be­ing ar­rested on Fri­day in the Drosero dis­trict of Xan­thi in north­east­ern Greece on charges of al­legedly at­tack­ing three po­lice of­fi­cers with a chain­saw. Another three men, the at­tacker’s 18-year-old son and two more aged 17 and 16, were also ar­rested for at­tempt­ing to ob­struct his ar­rest. Ac­cord­ing to early re­ports, the fa­ther and son have been charged with rob­bery in the past.

Flight de­lays.

Flights were slightly de­layed on Satur­day at Thes­sa­loniki’s Make­do­nia Air­port due to fog. Ac­cord­ing to air­port staff, the fog was not thick enough to lead to the can­cel­la­tion of flights or to ma­jor de­lays. Last week thick fog caused long de­lays for some in­com­ing and out­go­ing flights.

Athens blaze.

Three fire en­gines and their ac­com­pa­ny­ing crews rushed to one of the iconic “Pros­fy­gika” apart­ment build­ings on the cap­i­tal’s Alexan­dras Av­enue af­ter a fire was re­ported in one of the apart­ments on Satur­day. Ac­cord­ing to re­ports, two peo­ple were re­moved from the build­ing’s rooftop. The build­ings, con­structed in the 1930s to house refugees from Asia Mi­nor, are lo­cated next to the Supreme Court.

Zakyn­thos quake.

A mod­er­ate earth­quake mea­sur­ing 4.7 on the Richter scale hit the Io­nian is­land of Zakyn­thos early on Satur­day morn­ing, the Athens Ob­ser­va­tory re­ported. Ac­cord­ing to re­ports, the quake’s epi­cen­ter was lo­cated be­tween the is­land and the port of Kyllini in western Greece. Two af­ter­shocks, mea­sur­ing 3.1 and 2.5 Richter, were recorded on the same day. No dam­age or in­juries were re­ported.

Crime sweep.

A large-scale po­lice op­er­a­tion led to 20 ar­rests in the Pelo­pon­nese over the weekend. Ac­cord­ing to early re­ports, 93 peo­ple were de­tained as part of a po­lice crack­down on crime in the re­gions of Ar­gol­ida, Ar­ca­dia and La­co­nia. Those ar­rested faced charges for drug pos­ses­sion and elec­tric­ity theft, among other of­fenses.
