Bulgarian woman stabbed
Police in the northern port city of Thessaloniki were investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of a 34-year-old Bulgarian woman who was found stabbed to death on Friday. According to reports, the victim’s body was discovered by her husband and a friend of his at their central Thessaloniki apartment and displayed multiple stab wounds to the neck.
A 42-year-old man was expected to face a prosecutor after being arrested on Friday in the Drosero district of Xanthi in northeastern Greece on charges of allegedly attacking three police officers with a chainsaw. Another three men, the attacker’s 18-year-old son and two more aged 17 and 16, were also arrested for attempting to obstruct his arrest. According to early reports, the father and son have been charged with robbery in the past.
Flights were slightly delayed on Saturday at Thessaloniki’s Makedonia Airport due to fog. According to airport staff, the fog was not thick enough to lead to the cancellation of flights or to major delays. Last week thick fog caused long delays for some incoming and outgoing flights.
Three fire engines and their accompanying crews rushed to one of the iconic “Prosfygika” apartment buildings on the capital’s Alexandras Avenue after a fire was reported in one of the apartments on Saturday. According to reports, two people were removed from the building’s rooftop. The buildings, constructed in the 1930s to house refugees from Asia Minor, are located next to the Supreme Court.
A moderate earthquake measuring 4.7 on the Richter scale hit the Ionian island of Zakynthos early on Saturday morning, the Athens Observatory reported. According to reports, the quake’s epicenter was located between the island and the port of Kyllini in western Greece. Two aftershocks, measuring 3.1 and 2.5 Richter, were recorded on the same day. No damage or injuries were reported.
A large-scale police operation led to 20 arrests in the Peloponnese over the weekend. According to early reports, 93 people were detained as part of a police crackdown on crime in the regions of Argolida, Arcadia and Laconia. Those arrested faced charges for drug possession and electricity theft, among other offenses.
