Vaxevanis fined 10,000 euros for ‘slanderous’ texts
Investigative journalist Costas Vaxevanis has been ordered to pay 10,000 euros in damages to the Vatopedi Monastery on Mount Athos after a first instance court found two of his articles slanderous and insulting. The articles, which referred to the monastery’s role in a controversial land swap deal with the state, appeared in Epikaira magazine in 2010 and Unfollow magazine in 2012. Vatopedi had been seeking 15,000 euros in damages. Judges, however, yesterday rejected a claim by Vatopedi that the journalist be banned from writing on issues involving the monastery.
