Vax­e­va­nis fined 10,000 eu­ros for ‘slan­der­ous’ texts

In­ves­tiga­tive jour­nal­ist Costas Vax­e­va­nis has been or­dered to pay 10,000 eu­ros in dam­ages to the Vato­pedi Monastery on Mount Athos af­ter a first in­stance court found two of his ar­ti­cles slan­der­ous and in­sult­ing. The ar­ti­cles, which re­ferred to the monastery’s role in a con­tro­ver­sial land swap deal with the state, ap­peared in Epikaira mag­a­zine in 2010 and Un­fol­low mag­a­zine in 2012. Vato­pedi had been seek­ing 15,000 eu­ros in dam­ages. Judges, how­ever, yes­ter­day re­jected a claim by Vato­pedi that the jour­nal­ist be banned from writ­ing on is­sues in­volv­ing the monastery.
