The Council of Europe’s Commissioner for Human Rights Nils Muiznieks has asked Greek authorities to end the collective expulsions of immigrants, particularly of refugees from Syria and other war-torn nations.

Muiznieks sent a letter to Public Order Minister Nikos Dendias and Merchant Marine Minister Miltiadis Varvitsiotis last month urging Greece to “to radically change its migration policy and practice,” according to a statement on the organization’s website yesterday. He expressed concern over reported pushbacks of “a large number of Syrians fleeing war violence and allegations of ill-treatment of migrants.” He also cited a report by German watchdog Pro Asyl, according to which Greece pushed back 2,000 migrants between December 2011 and August 2013.
