New war­rant for ex-bank chief Filip­pidis is­sued

Pros­e­cu­tors yes­ter­day is­sued a fresh ar­rest war­rant for the for­mer head of Hel­lenic Postbank (TT) An­ge­los Filip­pidis, who is in a Turk­ish jail pend­ing his extradition to Greece in con­nec­tion with a loan scan­dal em­broil­ing TT, af­ter a probe by the coun­try’s money-laun­der­ing agency re­vealed that he is­sued sus­pi­cious loans worth a to­tal of 104 mil­lion eu­ros to a se­ries of com­pa­nies. A 52-mil­lion-euro loan given by TT in 2009 to a real es­tate firm that sub­se­quently filed for bank­ruptcy has come un­der par­tic­u­lar scru­tiny. The new ar­rest war­rant against Filip­pidis, who was ar­rested ear­lier this month on charges of breach of faith, fraud and money laun­der­ing, came af­ter pros­e­cu­tors brought charges against ev­ery­one who was a mem­ber of the TT board when Filip­pidis was in charge. Sev­eral en­trepreneurs are to be charged in con­nec­tion with the widen­ing scan­dal, ac­cord­ing to sources.
