Po­lit­i­cal par­ties con­demn ar­son at­tack on news­pa­per

Par­ties across the po­lit­i­cal spec­trum yes­ter­day con­demned an ar­son at­tack that de­stroyed the head­quar­ters of the free weekly Athens Voice news­pa­per in the cen­tral Athens neigh­bor­hood of Exarchia.

“Nei­ther the press nor democ­racy in this coun­try can be in­tim­i­dated by ter­ror­ist at­tacks of this sort,” gov­ern­ment spokes­woman Sofia Voul­tepsi said after a group call­ing it­self Anti-Cap­i­tal­ist Ac­tion claimed re­spon­si­bil­ity for the at­tack which took place in the early hours of Thurs­day.

In a sym­bolic ges­ture Cul­ture Min­is­ter Costas Ta­soulas yes­ter­day vis­ited the dam­aged of­fices and pur­chased a sub­scrip­tion for the pub­li­ca­tion.

“We con­demn the at­tack... which is also di­rected against free­dom of the press,” left­ist SYRIZA said.

PA­SOK, Demo­cratic Left and the Com­mu­nist Party (KKE) all is­sued sim­i­lar state­ments.

Athens Voice will be back on the stands next Thurs­day.
