A 48-year-old civil servant sentenced to three life terms for multiple cases of fraud and embezzlement has been living in the monastic community of Mount Athos, northern Greece, for the past eight years, police said yesterday after arresting the fugitive.

The man, a former accountant at the Municipality of Dafni-Hymettus, was convicted in absentia in 2011, along with three accomplices, for embezzling 9 million euros from municipal coffers. Police arrested him on Monday in Karyes, the administrative capital of the Mount Athos community, after he was seen on the boat that serves the crossing between the ports of Ouranoupolis and Dafni. The man had been living in hermitages for eight years, masquerading as a novice monk, police said.
