An Athens prosecutor yesterday ordered an investigation into claims by the owner of a kiosk in the central district of Exarchia according to which a group of police officers roughed him up and tried to steal several bottles of water from the kiosk on the night of November 17 when a rally marking the 41st anniversary of a student uprising against the junta turned violent. The Greek Police (ELAS) has already asked its internal affairs department to probe the claims which the officers in question reject, claiming that they tried to pay for the water but were rebuffed. In an amateur video of the incident posted on the Internet, officers in riot gear can be seen grappling with a man next to a kiosk.
