A 55-year-old man in Thessaloniki was sentenced to 20 years in jail yesterday for taking hostages at a German school in the northern Greek city in 2009. Costas Arabatzis kidnapped the school’s headmaster and administrator, as well as a teacher, asking for 10 million euros in ransom. He had threatened to blow up the building if his demand was not met but eventually turned himself in to police. Arabatzis had been convicted for a similar assault at the same school in 2006 but was granted early release from prison based on good conduct.
