A police officer serving on the Aegean island of Kos who was caught on camera slapping an immigrant and threatening others with a knife was suspended yesterday by the Greek Police (ELAS), which announced that an urgent investigation had been ordered into the man’s “reprehensible actions.”

The statement from ELAS was issued just a few hours after an Associated Press reporter posted on Twitter a video and photographs showing an officer slap an immigrant on the face outside the main police station on Kos and wave a crowd of others into line with a knife in his hand.

Kos, which is a popular summer tourist destination, has been overwhelmed by a growing influx of undocumented immigrants, along with Lesvos and Samos.
