Po­lice­men tried to fleece is­land shop own­ers

Two po­lice­men have been ar­rested on Zakyn­thos for al­legedly try­ing to ex­tort thou­sands of eu­ros from store own­ers.

The two sus­pects, aged 31 and 34, told own­ers of shops on the Io­nian is­land that they had been sent to Zakyn­thos from Athens to con­duct checks on lo­cal busi­nesses. They al­legedly asked for a to­tal of 20,000 eu­ros not to carry out the bo­gus in­spec­tions.

They were ar­rested af­ter col­lect­ing 10,540 eu­ros in marked notes. The store own­ers had ear­lier tipped off the po­lice. One sus­pect is a mem­ber of the fi­nan­cial po­lice, the other an an­titer­ror­ism of­fi­cer.
