Drug seizures shrink in 2014

The amount of drugs seized in Greece last year was mostly down but there was a sharp rise in the num­ber of cannabis plants de­stroyed by po­lice.

Ac­cord­ing to data re­leased by the po­lice’s drugs squad, com­pared to 2013 there was a 57.9 per­cent drop in co­caine seizures, which amounted to just un­der 300 ki­los. There was also a de­cline in the amount of cannabis con­fis­cated.

How­ever, the num­ber of cannabis plants up­rooted by of­fi­cers more than dou­bled last year, when they to­taled more than 52,000, com­pared to around 23,000 a year ear­lier.

There was a rise of 973 per­cent in the amount of heroin de­tected by author­i­ties but this was due to the seizure of a sin­gle 2.1-ton ship­ment.
