Drug seizures shrink in 2014
The amount of drugs seized in Greece last year was mostly down but there was a sharp rise in the number of cannabis plants destroyed by police.
According to data released by the police’s drugs squad, compared to 2013 there was a 57.9 percent drop in cocaine seizures, which amounted to just under 300 kilos. There was also a decline in the amount of cannabis confiscated.
However, the number of cannabis plants uprooted by officers more than doubled last year, when they totaled more than 52,000, compared to around 23,000 a year earlier.
There was a rise of 973 percent in the amount of heroin detected by authorities but this was due to the seizure of a single 2.1-ton shipment.
