Big wave of summer holidaymakers flee city
Greek coast guard and traffic police remained on standby over the weekend to facilitate an increased exodus of people leaving the capital for their summer vacations after the August 15 national holiday. Traffic at the main ports of Piraeus, Rafina and Lavrio peaked with around 60 ferries departing for the Saronic and Aegean islands on Saturday alone. The ferries were 80 percent booked to capacity, according to sources. The country’s highways were busy too as Athenians took to the roads to drive to their villages for the summer break.
