Two Bul­gar­ian na­tion­als, aged 17 and 21, faced a pros­e­cu­tor in the Cre­tan port of Irak­lio yesterday in con­nec­tion with a vi­cious fa­tal as­sault on a 71-year-old man in the re­gion of Moires last week. The two men had been briefly de­tained for ques­tion­ing fol­low­ing the as­sault and were ar­rested yesterday fol­low­ing fur­ther in­ves­ti­ga­tion by po­lice. Ac­cord­ing to the probe, the two men broke into the vic­tim’s home last Thurs­day in a bid to bur­gle the prop­erty. Af­ter spot­ting him, one of the pair stabbed him re­peat­edly with a knife in the throat, chest and stom­ach. The 71-year-old was found dead in his home a few hours later. Po­lice also de­tained a 38-year-old Bul­gar­ian woman, the mother of the younger sus­pect, for ne­glect­ful su­per­vi­sion of a mi­nor.
