Visitors by road to hit 10 million
Visitors from Bulgaria and Turkey to Greece are set to reach a new record high of 2 million this year.
The increase in arrivals from the two neighboring countries will put this year’s figure for road tourism at over 10 million visitors. According to recent data from the Institute of the Association of Greek Tourism Enterprises (INSETE), road arrivals from January to July rose 22 percent compared to the same period last year, despite a 4 percent drop last month.
Visitors from Bulgaria rose 18.7 percent in the first six months of the year compared to the same period last year. After Turkey, Greece was the most favored holiday destination for Bulgarians according to Bulgaria’s Ministry of Tourism. This year, visitors from Bulgaria are expected to pass the 1-million mark compared to 866,609 last year.
One of the attractions of Greece for Bulgarians is the low cost of visiting beaches with facilities – the cost of renting a beach umbrella and two sun loungers was on average 28.50 euros this year according to Bulgarian sources.
Visitors from Turkey to Greece are also expected to surpass the 1million mark for the first time this year, 90 percent of whom will arrive by road, according to research by the Bank of Greece.
