Refugees fer­ried from is­lands to Pi­raeus

A refugee holds child af­ter dis­em­bark­ing from the gov­ern­mentchar­tered Eleft­he­rios Venize­los ferry at the port of Pi­raeus. The ship, which has the ca­pac­ity to carry some 2,000 peo­ple, con­tin­ued trav­el­ing be­tween Pi­raeus and Kos, Lesvos and other Aegean is­lands over the week­end as author­i­ties tried to ease the over­crowd­ing caused by con­tin­u­ous ar­rivals from Tur­key. Euro­pean Immigration Com­mis­sioner Dim­itris Avramopou­los said in an in­ter­view on Satur­day that Brus­sels would try to set up a per­ma­nent body over­see­ing the al­lo­ca­tion of refugees within the EU.
