Po­lice in Ha­nia, Crete, yesterday were keep­ing a close watch over a 24-year-old man in a crit­i­cal con­di­tion at a lo­cal hos­pi­tal as a re­sult of sev­eral gun­shot wounds sus­tained ear­lier in the day fol­low­ing an as­sault be­lieved to be prompted by a vendetta. The 24-year-old was shot at least five times at close range, in­clud­ing in the head and neck, and had to un­dergo ex­ten­sive surgery. A 25-year-old man has been ar­rested in con­nec­tion with the shoot­ing, which oc­curred in the early hours of yesterday morn­ing at a pop­u­lar eatery in the old town of Ha­nia in the pres­ence of dozens of wit­nesses. It is be­lieved that the at­tack was prompted by a deadly al­ter­ca­tion be­tween the young men’s fathers, prompt­ing con­cerns about more vi­o­lence.
