Field of broken dreams
Refugees walk through a field in Idomeni, northern Greece, to reach the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, from where they expect to board trains heading further north into Europe. Tens of thousands of refugees, mostly Syrians, have made this journey after arriving on Greece’s eastern Aegean islands during the summer. The refugees are transported from the islands, particularly Kos and Lesvos, to Athens by ferry boats chartered by the government. More than 2,100 refugees arrived in Piraeus on Saturday night on board the Eleftherios Venizelos. Another ship was expected to transfer around 1,800 people yesterday.
