Four in 10 Greeks will be over the age of 60 in 2050, according to data quoted yesterday by the Hellenic Association of Gerontology and Geriatrics ahead of International Day of Older Persons today.

Over-60s make up 27 percent of the population in Greece today. It is estimated this will reach 33 percent in 2030 and 40.8 percent in 2050, according to the association.

The figures were published as statistics released by the Hellenic Statistical Authority (ELSTAT) showed that Greece’s population shrank by 21,592 in 2014 due to a drop in births and rise in deaths. There were 92,148 births last year, which was 2.1 percent down on 2013. In contrast, deaths rose by 1.7 percent to 113,740.
