Ex-Olympic Games sites pro­vide shel­ter for mi­grants

Hun­dreds of mi­grants have been housed at for­mer Athens 2004 Olympics fa­cil­i­ties in the south­ern sub­urb of Elliniko as lo­cal author­i­ties and the gov­ern­ment scram­ble to find places where Syr­i­ans, Afghans and oth­ers who have fled to Greece can stay safely. Yesterday, there was an op­er­a­tion to clear Vic­to­ria Square, near the city cen­ter, where hun­dreds of mi­grants had been camped for the last few weeks. Buses trans­ferred the mi­grants to another for­mer Olympic site, the Galatsi in­door arena. A to­tal of around 1,300 peo­ple were moved, al­low­ing City of Athens san­i­ta­tion teams to move in and clean the square.
