Son proves he paid his taxes

The son of Greek busi­ness­man Thomas Li­ak­ounakos was re­leased from cus­tody yesterday af­ter be­ing briefly de­tained over un­paid taxes ear­lier in the day, author­i­ties said. Sources in­di­cated that fol­low­ing his ar­rest, Nikos Li­ak­ounakos pro­vided ev­i­dence that his tax ar­rears had been set­tled with tax author­i­ties. His fa­ther was ar­rested on Tues­day on charges of bribery and money laun­der­ing af­ter a probe launched by a pros­e­cu­tor found that an al­leged 2-mil­lion-euro bribe for an air­borne early warn­ing sys­tem that Greece pur­chased in 1999 passed through an off­shore com­pany in his name. Thomas Li­ak­ounakos is ex­pected to face a pros­e­cu­tor to­day.
