Tax eva­sion, smug­gling cost 20 bln eu­ros per year

Cash-strapped Greece loses up to 20 bil­lion eu­ros a year to tax eva­sion and smug­gling, and more than a mil­lion peo­ple and busi­nesses are un­der in­ves­ti­ga­tion, a top fi­nance of­fi­cial said yesterday. “Tax eva­sion and smug­gling are worth be­tween 15 and 20 bil­lion eu­ros a year,” Al­ter­nate Fi­nance Min­is­ter Try­fon Alex­i­adis told re­porters. The Greek Fi­nan­cial Crimes Squad (SDOE) is cur­rently in­ves­ti­gat­ing 38,000 cases in­volv­ing 1.3 mil­lion peo­ple and busi­nesses, he said.
