Police yesterday were seeking the thieves who stole a brass bust of famed Greek singer Sofia Vembo from in front of Volos Town Hall over the weekend. The bust had been unveiled 10 years ago to honor Vembo, who grew up in Volos, in central Greece, after moving to the city with her family from Eastern Thrace. Vembo shot to fame in Greece during the Second World War on account of singing patriotic songs, which earned her the nickname of “Songstress of Victory.” As a result, she was given the honorary rank of major in the Hellenic Army.
