Two tax inspectors lost their appeals against jail sentences for fraud in Thessaloniki yesterday. An appeals court handed prison terms of five and seven years to the two civil servants after finding them guilty of working with three other colleagues to authorize value-added tax returns for a company based on bogus invoices. The firm is said to have illegally received some 900,000 euros between 1996 and 1998. The court, however, did decide to reduce the sentences of three tax inspectors who were given life terms in the initial trial and had been serving their time in prison since then.
