Credit sec­tor stocks soar

The prospect of lower cap­i­tal re­quire­ments for banks and the up­ward trend recorded on other Euro­pean mar­kets re­sulted in sig­nif­i­cant gains for bank chips and the ma­jor­ity of other stocks on the Greek bourse yesterday.

The Athens Ex­change (ATHEX) gen­eral in­dex closed at 694.48 points, adding 2.71 per­cent to Wed­nes­day’s 676.13 points. The large-cap FTSE 25 in­dex ex­panded 3.30 per­cent to end at 207.50 points.

Banks in­creased 13.91 per­cent, with Al­pha ris­ing 27.36 per­cent, fol­lowed by Eurobank (25 per­cent) and Pi­raeus (22.86 per­cent). Lamda De­vel­op­ment fell 1.96 per­cent and EYDAP lost 1.40 per­cent.

In to­tal 62 stocks grew, 20 dropped and 15 stayed put. Turnover amounted to 47.9 mil­lion eu­ros, more than twice Wed­nes­day’s 23.3 mil­lion.
