A misdemeanors court yesterday handed a two-year suspended prison sentence to Volos Mayor Achilleas Beos, formerly the head of the Olympiakos Volou soccer club, after finding him guilty of trying to bribe a referee in 2011, but Beos was allowed to pay off the sentence for 7,280 euros. The charges relate to an incident in 2011 when Beos is said to have threatened referee Giorgos Daloukas. Defending himself in court before the verdict was issued, Beos protested his innocence, claiming that the whole case had been built on audio recordings that, he claimed, had been tampered with. Beos still faces a string of criminal charges, including running a criminal organization and money laundering in connection with a match-fixing scandal.
