Four die, six res­cued off Lesvos

Author­i­ties re­cov­ered four bod­ies and res­cued six peo­ple – five men and one woman – af­ter a dinghy full of mi­grants over­turned off the eastern Aegean is­land of Lesvos, yes­ter­day. A search and res­cue op­er­a­tion was launched as the sur­vivors – one girl, one boy, a man and a woman – were taken to a hospi­tal in the is­land’s cap­i­tal, Myti­lene. A to­tal 13 pas­sen­gers were be­lieved to be on the boat, which had set off from the Turk­ish town of Dik­ili, ac­cord­ing to author­i­ties. An es­ti­mated 2,900 mi­grants have died or gone miss­ing in the Mediter­ranean since the start of the year.
