Unionism has no place in the armed forces and can have a destructive effect. There are certain sensitive areas of the broader public sector that need to be kept apart from the influence of political parties and the tensions of unionism. The Greek state has already paid a hefty price for this scourge, with the most blatant example being the secret services, which went through a period of complete turmoil because of political interventions and influence. This is the sort of bad decision that can be taken in an instant but has effects that can last for decades.
