Fire on Crete.
Firefighters were fighting a huge blaze fanned by strong winds yesterday in Ierapetra in the Lasithi region of Crete. Efforts were further hampered by the difficult terrain and the flames, according to some reports, reached as high as 30 meters. Thirty fire engines and 60 firefighters, military personnel and volunteers were fighting the blaze. The fire has razed parts of the valley of Selakano and large tracts of olive and vine groves. Another fire also broke out yesterday in Neochori, about 18 kilometers from the town of Ioannina, northwestern Greece.
